karolisParticipantHey,
Just ordered ospi yesterday, but I couldn’t use the offered transformer since it requires 110v input, while in EU we have 230.ย So I thought I would buy one in a local electronics shop or ebay.
It appears that I have been too optimistic ๐ Electronics shops don’t have them and there is one seller on ebay.de which has them, but apparently doesn’t ship to my country.
So… I am sure I’m not the only one with this issue. ย What is the best place to buy a 24VAC transformer in EU?
thanks

pls90ParticipantI bought this one
http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/515213/Hutschienen-Stromversorgung-Serie-TBD2-ACAC-24-V-AC-24-W-Comatec-Inhalt-1-St?ref=searchDetail
This one is available in a range of watt ratings. Depending on the number of stations you want to use at same time you might have to choose one with more or less power.May 10, 2015 at 3:33 am #37526
karolisParticipantthank you for the link.
I was hoping to get one pluggable into the wall outlet like they sell on this site. Are such options available in EU?
May 10, 2015 at 11:42 pm #37549
RayKeymasterWhere do you get your 24VAC sprinkler valves? Won’t the supplies of the valves provide matching transformer?
May 11, 2015 at 3:43 am #37558
AugustinParticipantI had same issue, the seller from where I bought the RainBird system didn’t have transformers, I checked other sellers of other irrigation systems and I could find from Orbit the cheapest but it was still around 30-50$.
I bought an used one from Hozelock brand, wall outlet “pluggable”, which is a brand for residential garden and pools systems and paid about 20$.May 11, 2015 at 3:57 am #37561
karolisParticipantI wonder why its so difficult to get in Europe. Do European systems normally use different voltage?
The guy from ebay eventually responded and decided to ship to my country, but honestly this looks like the only place to get a wall outlet transformer in EU, which is kinda weird ๐
May 11, 2015 at 4:18 am #37564
AugustinParticipantWhich systems are European? ๐ All the ones I know are US ๐
I was also surprised how hard is to find such things.May 11, 2015 at 4:39 am #37565
laurentParticipantHello karolis,
Ray has right, the best is to buy in the same shop where you buy all sprinklers.
Or if your are living in France I can give you some web sites to buy a transformer with Voltage/current … and the correct main power plug for your country.May 12, 2015 at 10:58 am #37602
RayKeymasterI guess another choice is to get 110V to 24V AC transformer (which is the type we sell), and then use a 220V to 110V step-down adapter which may be easier to source.
May 13, 2015 at 12:37 am #37632
AugustinParticipantRay you are pretty much right, I thought to that when I ordered mine, the problem is that 110V to 24V AC transformer weights at least twice as much as the controller itself and could easily double the price of shipping from US to EU. This was my reason not to go that route.
May 13, 2015 at 12:58 am #37634
WokkeltjeParticipantIf you have a doorbell in your house, then it is possible you already have a 220V/24V trafo in in your electricity pannel.
My OS is located next to it so I have no need for seperate extra trafo.Of course you need to be able to place your OS nearby.
May 13, 2015 at 3:05 am #37636
laurentParticipantBut take care about a transformer used for a doorbell or such devices like door lock.
Some high interferences can be send to the transformer, and also the opensprinkler board.
Sometimes it’s best to have a independent transformer to avoid interferences between different sources.May 18, 2015 at 8:59 am #37756
RayKeymasterA quick update of on-going development: I have been working on an experimental version of DC-powered OpenSprinkler. It’s powered by 9V DC power supply which is easier to source world-wide. Although this is 9VDC powered, it’s still meant for 24 VAC sprinkler valves. Technically this is based on my research of 24 VAC sprinkler valves in this blog post (http://rayshobby.net/understanding-24vac-sprinkler-valves/). Long story short, the controller uses a boost converter to bump 9VDC up to 24VAC in order to energize the valves initially, then drops the voltage down to 9VDC to supply the required current by the sprinkler valves. We’ve done some initial tests and it seems to work well. Some advantages of DC powered OpenSprinkler include: 1) power supply is lighter and easier to source; 2) the same controller can work with both 24VAC valves and DC valves (like 12VDC or 24VDC valves); 3) a DC circuit also makes it easy to do current sensing and detect shorted solenoids.
We will be releasing an experimental batch of the DC controller soon, hopefully within a week or two.

stewa9ParticipantHi
This may be a bit late but I hope it helps someone in the future. It looks like RS sell suitable 230v to 24VAC 800mA PSU for around ยฃ11 delivered. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/7300247/ .They also sell one with a European plug. CPC Farnell also sell a 24VAC 750mA psu, however that one has no inbuilt plug http://cpc.farnell.com/stontronics/t3445sa/inline-ac-ac-psu-24v-0-75a-bare/dp/PW02881?ost=power+supply&categoryId=700000010071
Just for completeness this has already been posted on here before
I cannot see any reference the AC or DC I assume however it’s AC as it says it suitable for most 24V sprinkler systems.

details of Orbit’s transformer.
https://www.orbitonline.com/products/sprinkler-systems/accessories/timer-accessories/transformer/transformer-eur24v750maI am sure there are other PSUs available but all of these seem reasonably priced.

karolisParticipantstewa9, awesome post, thanks for the links!
Is it just me, or RS-online site is down for the 2nd day in a row?
May 25, 2015 at 1:24 pm #37938
stewa9Participantkarolis I have been able to get the RS-online site to work both yesterday and just now.
b.t.w the RS product code is 730-0247 and the description is
Mfr. Part No. AD4830-24.0-0800UK
24V ac, 1 Output, Linear, Plug In Power Supply, 800mA, 20VA, Type G – British 3-PinMay 25, 2015 at 1:31 pm #37940
karolisParticipantThis is so strange… When I go to RS-online, it takes a while to load, and then I get an error message like in the screenshot. Tried another browser and it works fine… must be some broken cookie.

karolisParticipantHere are the links to EuroPlug PSUs, in case anyone is still searching:

BinaryOSParticipantKeep your eyes out for old Christmas light power supplies, some of the older ones are 24VAC.
May 28, 2015 at 9:32 pm #38031
RayKeymasterOther places to look for are security camera stores — classic security cameras use 24V AC power supply. Also, many HVAC systems, and even door bell circuit sometimes use 24V AC.
May 31, 2015 at 6:13 am #38063
karolisParticipantReceived the transformer from rs-online a few days ago.
Overall very happy with it: good price, free courier delivery to door, the adapter itself is good quality and seems to be made in Germany ๐June 3, 2017 at 4:05 pm #46531
straylenParticipantHi
I’m looking for a suitable 24 V AC adapter available in France. Can’t find them on the French RS website.
Steve.June 4, 2017 at 1:14 am #46539
karolisParticipantRS product code is 730-0243.
The page says temporarily out of stock in France. It’s available in Lithuanian store. I can buy one for you and send to France if you pay for the shipping.
June 13, 2017 at 2:08 am #46717
RayKeymasterNot sure if this helps: it doesn’t have to be 24VAC: slightly lower is also fine (for example, 22VAC or even 20VAC is also fine). Don’t go higher than 26VAC though.
