iDougParticipantMy Beaglebone Black has stopped working. (It’s power light will come on and immediately go out. No other lights on the BBB come on.)
Is there a means to test the OpenSprinkler to see if it is working?
The OpenSprinkler power light does come on and stays on. The fuse looks good and I can get a voltage across it with an ohm meter.May 28, 2014 at 6:02 am #27044
RayKeymasterJust unplug the BeagleBone Black from OSBo, and use a USB cable to power it. See if it can boot up.

iDougParticipantThe BeagleBone Black is not working and is on it’s way to the Beagle Hospital. What I don’t know is why?
The OpenSprinkler OSBo was working with valves on stations 1 and 2. The solenoid on station 3 was bad.
At the time the OpenSprinkler OSBo stopped, it was connected to the sprinkler values on stations 4 though 9 (I have the Extension Board v1.1). This was the first time the OpenSprinkler OSBo had been connected to these valves (4 through 9). Stations 1 though 3 where not connected because a solenoid on that water line was not working.
I have checked for shorted connections and not found any.
How do I check the OpenSprinkler board (not the BeagleBone) to see if it is working correctly?
How do I check the Extension board to see if it is working correctly?Because I need sprinklers now I have gone ahead and ordered the OpenSprinkler v2.1u (semi-assembled DIY).

RayKeymasterThe OSBo and expansion board have all been tested before we ship them out. It’s not so easy to test them without a tester. Basically you will need a microcontroller, such as an Arduino, to send control signals to the board to test various components on board.
When using expansion board, one thing you should be careful about is inserting the extension cable correctly. Now that the extension cable uses polarized connectors, it’s unlikely you will insert them in the wrong way. Still, if you are inserting the connector with the case top removed, it’s possible to misalign the connector with the pin headers. When this happens, you may end up connecting a GPIO pin to ground, and that can potentially damage the BeagleBone.
If you want, you can send back your boards to us so we can use our testers to check if the boards are still working. Email to [email protected]. Thanks.

iDougParticipantI know that the expansion board was plugged in correctly, because rim of the base is in the way of the tab on the expansion plug. That said, the Beagle Hospital has said “According to our diagnosis, the power rail VDD_3V3A has been found shorted to ground.”
I do have an Arduino board, but I don’t know what would be involved in testing the OSBo. If you don’t mind I would like to send the OSBo back to you for testing. (Am afraid to plug the BBB into it, again.)
Should I send it to:

Amherst, MA 01002PS, I am using the OpenSprinkler v2.1u DIY and expansion board. They are working perfectly. Will keep the OSBo and BBB for experimenting and a possible future project.

RayKeymasterSure, you can send it back to the address you typed, and we will take a look at the board to see if it’s still functioning.
One of the vulnerabilities of Pi or BBB is that shorting GPIO pins can easily cause damage to the board. Arduino is much more robust in this aspect. Perhaps in the next revision I should consider adding protection circuitry to the GPIO pins to avoid shorting. Sometimes a simple resistor connected in series is sufficient to provide the protection.
