brambilParticipantDear all,
I am currently upgrading my garden irrigation system and considering OpenSprinkler as a solution.
Could someone clarify the differences between OpenSprinkler and OSPi?
I’m familiar with Raspberry Pi—I own several units—and I’m comfortable with Linux (Debian has been my primary OS since 2007). However, I’m trying to better understand the practical differences between the two options.
In particular:
Does the firmware affect only the controller board, or does it also involve the Raspberry Pi in the OSPi setup?
Which solution generally offers a more reliable Wi-Fi connection and overall stability?
With OSPi, is it possible to use physical buttons, or would I need to implement them through custom scripts?
Which features are only of one or the other platform?
My layout will be with 5 zone and 2 main valve (A and B). I want to alternate valve A and B, for example zone 1 to 4 will use water from valve A every Friday, then all the other day valve B. Zone 5 irrigate 2 times a day, using only B.
Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

RayKeymasterYou can find the comparison table here:
https://opensprinkler.github.io/OpenSprinkler-Firmware/faq/#technicalFor OSPi you will provide an RPi and follow the firmware instructions to install and compile the firmware yourself. If you have prior experience with RPi this should be quite easy.
Regarding WiFi and network reliability, Rpi is certainly better than the microcontroller based OpenSprinkler as RPi runs a full Linux system so can handle network much better.

brambilParticipantThanks.
What about expansions? Are the unused GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi exposed, and is it possible to expand OSPi like OpenSprinkler hardware with external sensors?
In my scenario (my layout will have 5 zones and 2 main valves, A and B), I want to alternate valve A and B. For example, zones 1 to 4 will use water from valve A every Friday, and valve B on all the other days. Zone 5 will irrigate twice a day using only valve B. Which option would be better?
Will it be possible to add an RS485 interface or an analog sensor board to the OSPi?
Is it possible to integrate OSPi with Home Assistant?
And regarding durability, what is the expected lifetime of an OpenSprinkler board and an OSPi? It will be installed in a box in the garden, with temperatures ranging from 0°C (occasionally down to -2°C once a year) up to +35°C.
