    In the schematic diagram, the symbol for QA1 is a FET type transistor similar to QA4 an AO3400. However, it is labeled as 2N3904 which is an NPN BJT type transistor.
    Should I use the 2N3904 or the AO3400?

    Either is fine. 2N3904 (which is a very common BJT transistor) is cheaper than the AO3400 MOSFET, but if you are building a small number of boards it makes sense to consolidate the component type.
