I need to control a single remote valve via wifi.
Can one send valve on/off data via the on-board wifi?

My thinking to use a 8266 board with relay at the remote valve and hopefully have it available in OS as a “virtual zone”.

Any insight into achieving this would be appreciated.

If you use a ESP8266 board with relay, and you know the HTTP command to send to it to turn on / off that relay, you can use OpenSprinkler’s HTTP Station feature — define a zone as HTTP zone, and type in the on/off command, then when this zone is turned on or off, it automatically sends the HTTP command to the remote ESP8266.
