Hi,
I’m looking at using MQTT to process system events, but am still new to MQTT, so am not sure about the following: while OpenSprinkler will obviously act as an MQTT client, do I have to use an external MQTT broker, or can I run something like mosquitto on the local OSPi to act as broker as well?
Any suggestions and comments will be highly appreciated.

The same RPi can be MQTT broker, you don’t need another RPi/computer as broker. RPi can run MQTT broker and OpenSprinkler firmware alongside each other.
By the way, these are questions that today’s generative AI can answer very well. Ask Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT they will give you clear answers.
Thanks Ray, that’s great! Thanks also for the hint on using the AIs to answer these questions; I did try briefly, but then thought I’d rather post on the forum for the benefit of others with similar questions.
Kind regards,
Charl
