reading current on valve solenoids?

I’m just wondering if there is any way to detect how much (if any) current is flowing when a valve is actuated.  This would be of great help in detecting open circuits, or bad solenoids.  I’ve had problems with critters eating the control wires, so this would be a good diagnostic to run on a routine basis.

Since the solenoid runs AC current, it’s a bit tricky to measure (more difficult than measuring DC current).
